 READING

Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth I was the queen of England from 1558 to 1603. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth was born in 1533. Her childhood was difficult because her mother died when she was very young, and she was sometimes not treated like a real princess.

When Elizabeth became queen at the age of 25, England had many problems. There were fights between Catholics and Protestants, and the country was not very strong. Elizabeth worked hard to bring peace. She created a new religious law that allowed most people to live together more calmly.

Her reign is called the Elizabethan Age. It was a time of art, music, and theatre. William Shakespeare wrote many of his famous plays during this period. Elizabeth also supported explorers like Francis Drake, who travelled around the world.

One of the most famous events of her reign was the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Spain sent a large fleet to attack England, but Elizabeth’s navy won the battle. This made her very popular.

Elizabeth never married, so people called her the “Virgin Queen.” She said she was married to her country. She died in 1603, after 45 years on the throne. Many people remember her as one of England’s greatest rulers.
